What is the Death of Fashion?

A newsletter about how fashion has died, its impact on history, some bits about its psychological influence, what to wear, and more importantly some much-needed fashion humor. This newsletter is about the why of fashion. For instance, the origins of ungodly trends like this Y2k number:

The line between streetwear and fashion has successfully disappeared. The perfect storm of pandemic dressing, the emergence of streetwear, and the cult of celebrity have all sort of killed fashion. Yes, it all sounds very bleak, but it does bring on the need for a new beginning. The death of fashion doesn’t have to be completely negative. I’m here to talk about it, learn, and ensure that part of our fashion souls don’t die.

WHO AM I?

Here I am, in full garden gear, blissfully avoiding the chaos of toys and scooters that are taking over the garden. Wearing a Zara vest, and a custom-made Zophia skirt.

I’m Betsy Cohen, a 37-year-old American, with two boys under the age of five, navigating this busy life with the English guy I married seven years ago. Those who know me would tell you that I hold a profound affection for strong black coffee. They would also say that they’ve seen me running around in heels at the playground. I’m in the chapter of my life where I can’t wear white, courtesy of young children. I also have to confess, I was a Delia’s magazine lover. Ah, the '90s – my guilty pleasure and sadly, my ultimate source of fashion crack while growing up. I hail from the quiet suburbs of Maryland, where the notion of strolling to a magazine shop or cozy coffee spot was not a thing.

While I may not have a collection of haute couture pieces or much of a designer wardrobe, I have an insatiable curiosity about fashion's profound impact on our lives. As the founder of Zophia, a custom pencil skirt service, I've spent years unraveling the threads that connect what we wear, and how we think, feel, and interact with the world.
